A leak on cast iron guttering
We were called out to a property in Haywards Heath about a leak on its cast iron guttering. The customer had noticed water coming through and wanted the problem looked at properly rather than patched over. They were clear from the start that they wanted to keep the cast iron and not replace it with plastic, so the job was about putting the existing guttering right.
Taking the guttering down
To deal with it properly we took the cast iron guttering down rather than trying to work on it in place. That let us get a proper look at the sections and the leak, and carry out the restoration work needed on the guttering itself. Cast iron is heavier and less forgiving to handle than plastic, so it needs care when it comes down and goes back up.
Restoration work on the cast iron
We carried out restoration work on the guttering before it went back on the property. Keeping the original cast iron means the guttering stays in keeping with the building, which was what mattered to the customer. Once the work was done, we refitted the guttering.
The finished guttering
With the restoration complete and the guttering back in position, the leak the customer had called us about had been dealt with as part of the work. The original cast iron was kept rather than swapped for plastic, so the property kept its existing guttering. For anyone in Haywards Heath with older cast iron guttering, it is worth knowing that a leak does not always mean replacing it with plastic. Sometimes taking it down and restoring it is the better route, particularly where the owner wants to keep the character of the property. If you have a similar leak or want your guttering looked at, get in touch and we can take a look.
