Soffits and fascias are the boards that finish the edge of your roof — the fascia standing vertically at the end of the rafters carrying the gutter, and the soffit closing the gap underneath from the wall out to the fascia. Nobody thinks about them until they go grey and streaky, at which point they make an otherwise well-kept house look neglected from thirty metres away.
They also do a real job. Together they keep weather out of the roof structure, provide the fixing for the guttering, close the roof void against birds and squirrels, and carry the ventilation that stops condensation forming in the loft. When they fail, the consequences are structural rather than cosmetic.

How we clean, repair and replace soffits and fascias
1. Inspect
We check the boards for staining, cracking, movement and rot, look at the fixings and the ventilation, and establish whether they are uPVC, timber, capped timber or asbestos cement.
2. Clean
uPVC boards, gutter exteriors and downpipes are cleaned with the appropriate detergent and a soft brush, worked from the top down and rinsed with pure water for a streak-free finish.
3. Repair
Loose boards are refixed, split joints and end caps replaced, ventilation restored and small areas of failed board swapped out where the rest of the run is sound.
4. Replace where needed
Where boards are beyond repair we fit new uPVC fascia, soffit and trim with stainless fixings, correct ventilation and, where wanted, new guttering on the same visit.
Why uPVC goes grey — and what actually removes it
White uPVC ages in a specific way. The surface oxidises under UV light, becomes slightly porous, and then holds on to everything that lands on it: road film, algae, roof run-off carrying moss particles, and the vertical streaks that form where water runs off the gutter lip. Ordinary washing removes the loose dirt and leaves the ingrained staining behind, which is why so many people conclude their boards are simply worn out.
In most cases they are not. A dedicated uPVC cleaner, given time to work, plus soft-brush agitation and a pure water rinse, takes boards back remarkably close to their original colour. The pure water rinse matters — it dries without leaving mineral spotting, so the finish is even rather than patchy, which is exactly the failing of a bucket-and-sponge job at height.
Occasionally staining is genuinely permanent, usually where boards are very old and the surface has chalked badly, or where something has been painted over them and is now flaking. When we see that we will say so, and talk you through the options — which may be replacement, or may be leaving well alone for another couple of years.

Timber boards, rot and hidden problems
Original timber fascias and soffits, especially on houses built before the 1980s, need looking at properly rather than just washing. Paint that is blistering or flaking is often hiding soft, wet timber underneath, and the usual cause is a gutter that has been overflowing behind the board for years. Repainting over that treats the symptom and buys perhaps two seasons.
The other frequent problem is capping — where thin uPVC has been fitted over old timber without dealing with what is behind it. It looks fine on day one, and traps moisture against the rotting timber indefinitely. We will always try to establish whether boards are solid uPVC or capped timber before quoting, because it changes the recommendation completely.
Ventilation deserves a mention too. Modern soffits carry vents or a continuous vent strip to let air into the roof void, and it is surprisingly common to find them blanked off, painted over or omitted entirely during a previous refit. That shows up in the loft as condensation, damp insulation and mould on the underside of the sarking. When we replace boards, correct ventilation goes in as standard.
Full replacement in matching uPVC
Where boards are past saving, replacing them is a straightforward job, and the change to how the house looks is dramatic. We strip the old fascia and soffit back, inspect and treat the rafter feet, replace any decayed timber, then fit new uPVC fascia, soffit and trim with stainless steel fixings so nothing bleeds rust down the new board in two winters' time.
Profiles and colours are matched to the property — white, black, anthracite grey, rosewood and light oak woodgrain finishes are all readily available, along with matching bargeboards, cladding and box ends so the whole roofline is consistent. Because the guttering has to come off to do the work, it is almost always the sensible moment to renew it too, and we will price both together so you can see the difference.
New boards need essentially no maintenance beyond an occasional wash, which is the real long-term argument for uPVC over repainted timber. There is no repainting cycle, no rot risk at the joints, and the fixing for your guttering stays sound.
One visit for the whole roofline
Soffits, fascias, gutter exteriors, downpipes, roof moss and windows are all reachable with the same access equipment, and they are all part of the same visual band around the top of your house. Doing them together in one coordinated visit costs less than booking separate trades, and it means the result is uniform — there is nothing worse than gleaming white boards sitting under a green roof and above streaky glass.
