The Weald doesn't let paving dry out
Uckfield sits on the Weald, where sandstone and heavy clay soils meet, and that combination holds water. Paving on slow-draining ground stays damp far longer after rain than paving on a free-draining site, and damp paving is the single biggest factor behind algae growth.
Add the tree cover the town is known for — the wooded fringes towards Buxted and the Ashdown Forest side of TN22 — and you get constant leaf fall, shade for much of the day, and a steady supply of organic silt working into the joints. That silt behaves like a seed bed: spores germinate in it, moss establishes, and weeds follow within a couple of seasons.

It's lifting the silt out of the joints, refilling with clean kiln dried sand, applying a residual treatment that carries on working after we've left, and dealing with the overhanging growth or poor drainage keeping the surface wet.
